THE CHALLENGE
The Challenge
Kaplan's core backend microservices engine had not been updated for over 3 years. The legacy architecture was incompatible with newer GraphQL-based services and blocked AI-driven feature rollout. SSO expansion was blocked — Google and Microsoft authentication couldn't validate new domains. New student assessment formats couldn't be deployed on the existing infrastructure. The platform needed to scale globally.
THE SOLUTION
What We Built
Modernized the backend engine across ~10 .NET microservices to align with modern architecture and AI-integrated services. Improved Redis caching and service communication for performance gains. Implemented domain validation logic supporting secure Google and Microsoft SSO across new Kaplan domains. Enabled backend support for new student assessment formats. Ensured deployment across dev, staging, and production environments.
