The platform had no automated duplicate entity detection — in a system that serves as the regulatory Golden Source, duplicate entity records directly corrupt the compliance reports submitted to regulators.
Entity hierarchy and parent-child relationship validation was failing in specific scenarios — ultimate parent tracking was incorrect in edge cases affecting ownership and risk aggregation calculations.

Engineering Breakdown+

Deduplication Logic: Matching algorithm uses a weighted combination of entity name similarity, identifier overlap (LEI, SWIFT, DUNS), and jurisdiction attributes to score potential duplicates. Scores above a configurable threshold are surfaced for human review — regulatory data requires human confirmation before any record consolidation.

Hierarchy API Optimization: The original hierarchy queries were recursive CTEs without index support on the relationship tables. Added composite indexes on parent-child relationship columns and rewrote the recursive traversal to use a bounded iteration approach, eliminating unbounded recursion causing performance degradation at depth.
